How to create a custom track for Assetto Corsa EVO

Assetto Corsa EVO has no track editor in the game. The EvoForge Track Builder lets you draw a layout or start from a real place, then drive it in the game. Here is how.

The short answer

Assetto Corsa EVO has no track editor in the game. Kunos provides an SDK for modders, but it is made to assemble a track that was modelled beforehand in 3D software. Nothing lets you draw a layout and drive it the same evening.

EvoForge’s Track Builder does that. You draw a track or start from a real place, shape it in a 3D view drawn like the game, then EvoForge builds it, adds it to the game and starts the race. No 3D software needed. You find it in Workshop › Build a track.

The Track Builder is part of the EvoForge membership, from €5 a month.

Three ways to start

Draw your own, or start from a template

Start from a template gives you a ready layout to change: Oval (1.6 km), Club (2.4 km), Grand Prix (4.8 km), Figure eight (2.1 km, with a bridge) and Mountain pass (4.2 km, four hairpins, 220 m of climb). With the Layout tool, drag a point to move it, Shift + drag to change its height, and click on the track to add a point. Width, height and banking are set point by point, by slider or typed value.

The header shows an estimated lap time for a GT3. Click it for an onboard lap along the AI line (Esc stops it): a quick way to compare two versions of a corner.

From a real map: a circuit, a road or a GPS trace

From a real map… opens the Create from a real map window. Choose A route, then:

  • Circuits: type a circuit’s name. EvoForge lists the layouts OpenStreetMap knows around it (at Brands Hatch: the Grand Prix, Indy and the rallycross loops) and builds the one you pick, with its real elevation, its pit lane, its buildings and its woods. The imported Brands Hatch runs within about a metre of the laser-scanned version that ships with the game.
  • Roads: the named roads around a place, joined by road number. Pick the stretch to race with two sliders. Five kilometres of the Col de Turini come in with their real 380 m of climb.
  • A GPS trace: Start from a GPS trace (GPX, KML)…. A trace that does not come back to its start becomes a road.

Elevation comes from the best open survey of each country: IGN at one metre in France, national laser surveys in about twenty other countries, 30 m elsewhere. Trees are placed one by one from tree-height maps, with species chosen from the climate and the altitude.

A whole area of a town, up to 2.5 km

Choose An area: type an address, a district or a town, set the radius (200 m to 2.5 km) or draw the outline yourself, then Create the area. Before you start, EvoForge estimates the weight of the track and the build time.

Every street inside becomes a street you can drive: its width from the map, a cambered road, kerbs you feel, pavements, junctions with rounded corners, roundabouts with their island, zebra crossings and lane lines. Buildings stand on their real footprints with roofs that fit them. Rivers and lakes have their banks and quays, and bridges are part of their street. An area opens in Free roam: no start, no finish, you drive anywhere.

On a route, The whole area around the start does the same in a circle of 200 m to 1.5 km around the start line.

An area around Annecy: the place, the radius, and what to bring in.

A street circuit in a real town

An imported area can become a closed street circuit. In the Race tool, set the area type to Circuit, then click the streets the lap should take. The lap closes itself through the main roads. Alt + click closes a street; click a marker to remove it.

  • Barriers of your choice (concrete, guardrail, tyres, fence) run along the kerbs of the whole lap. Side streets, alleys and car parks are closed.
  • Bridges: a road bridge can be part of the lap, and the lap can pass under another one when there is at least 4.2 m of headroom.
  • Run-off roads: at the end of a braking zone into a tight corner, the street straight ahead stays open, lined with barriers and closed by a tyre wall.
  • The start: click a street to start there; the arrow reverses the direction.
  • At night, the area’s street lamps light the road, the barriers and the façades.
In the editor: a few streets clicked, the lap closes itself; run-off roads in blue.
Lyon at 10 p.m., in the game: the street lamps light the road and the barriers.

Shape and dress the track

The editor has one tool per job. What is generated automatically can be changed or removed, and put back.

ToolWhat you do with it
LayoutPlace and move the points; width, height and banking per point; Smooth around.
EdgesKerbs from the game’s own circuits (flat, raised, tall, ramp, sawtooth, rumble), placed automatically and editable one by one. Run-off surface and width, and the wall on each stretch: concrete barrier, guardrail, tyres or fence.
GroundPaint with a brush, a lasso or a fill: asphalt, worn asphalt, concrete, kerb, grass, gravel, dirt, pit lane. Each surface has its look, its grip and its sound, with the game’s own grip values. Road draws a street of your own; Relief raises, digs, flattens or smooths the ground.
PropsClose to a thousand objects from the game (barriers, signs, tents, grandstands, buildings, trees), placed one by one, along a line or scattered with a brush. Import an object (FBX, OBJ) adds your own, with their textures; they are solid in game.
MarkingsPaint on the track: chequered band, grid boxes, numbers, lines, hatching, arrows, chevrons or an image of your own. No effect on grip.
RaceStart line, grid slots, pit boxes and pit side, pit wall, AI drivers line, sectors, and the location, which sets the sun and the time of day.

In the 3D view, Aerial photo lays a photo of the place under the track, to trace and check. It comes from each country’s public mapping service and stays in the editor: it is not added to the game track. See-through draws what you placed transparent, so the photo shows underneath. Direction › Reverse drives the layout the other way: the start line and the pits move by themselves.

Start, grid, pits and AI line

Everything a race needs follows the layout on its own: start line on the longest straight, grid slots, pit lane and pit boxes, pit wall with team stands, start lights, AI line and three timing sectors. You only adjust.

The pit lane can be moved anywhere it fits along the track: the editor shows in green where it fits and says why a place is refused. With Start line moves with the pits on, the start line follows; off, each stays where you put it. Reset to automatic puts everything back.

Turn Closed loop off and the layout becomes a road from A to B, such as a mountain pass, a hill climb or a street. It ends at a finish arch, tyre walls close both ends, and there are no pits.

Build it and drive it

  1. Check Ready to race. It lists what is fine and what needs a look: a corner too tight, too little run-off, a gradient that is too steep, a layout that crosses itself without a bridge. Go there takes you to the spot.
  2. Close the game if it is open: the track cannot be built while it runs.
  3. Click Build. EvoForge builds the track and adds it to the game. A large town area takes a few minutes.
  4. Click Race here. The game starts on your track: a race on a circuit, a one-lap race from the grid to the arch on a road, a practice session without penalties in free roam.

Your track saves itself as you work, with undo and redo. It also appears in your Library like any other track; Edit in the track editor on its page opens it again. Your tracks and imported objects stay on your PC. Map data is downloaded to your PC: only the place you search is sent to the public map services, and their credits are written in the track.

How it runs in the game

Far away, the ground and the buildings switch to lighter versions, as on the game’s own tracks. On our test PC, a 2.5 km area of central Lyon, the heaviest case we tried (a dense town, two rivers, hills), runs at 77 frames per second, where the game’s own Nürburgring runs at 68. A 2.5 km area of Annecy runs at 92. A village or a mountain area of the same size is lighter.

Known limits

  • A road is raced as a one-lap race. In practice on a road, no lap is timed.
  • The map does not give the width of a real circuit: it starts at 12 m, set it point by point.
  • The map does not mark the start line of a real circuit: EvoForge puts it in the middle of the pit lane. Move it in Race.
  • In free roam, the game may still show its “wrong way” message, without any penalty.
  • A 2.5 km area of a dense town takes a while to open in the editor and weighs a few GB once built.
  • The public OpenStreetMap servers are sometimes busy. EvoForge tries another one and offers Try again.
  • A track whose name has accents shows the game’s default picture in its menus.

FAQ

Does Assetto Corsa EVO have a track editor?

Not in the game. Kunos provides an SDK for modders, made to assemble a track modelled in 3D software. EvoForge’s Track Builder lets you draw a track or build it from a real place, then drive it, without 3D software.

Can I make a real-world track for Assetto Corsa EVO?

Yes. From a real map, EvoForge builds a circuit by its name, a road, a GPS trace (GPX or KML) or a whole area of a town up to 2.5 km, with real elevation, buildings, trees, water and bridges, from OpenStreetMap and public surveys.

Can I race through the streets of my own town?

Yes. Import an area around your address, then in the Race tool set the area type to Circuit and click the streets the lap should take. Barriers line the lap and side streets are closed. Or keep Free roam and drive anywhere.

Do I need Blender or other 3D software?

No. The layout, the ground, the walls and the props are made in EvoForge, from the game’s own objects. You can still import your own objects in OBJ or FBX.

Can I share my track with friends?

Yes. Your track is in your Library like any other: select it, choose Compress into an archive, and send the file. Your friend drops it into EvoForge to install it.

Is the Track Builder free?

No, it is part of the EvoForge membership on Patreon. Installing mods, racing and the Paddock stay free.

Ready to try it?

EvoForge is a free download for Windows 10 / 11 and Linux. Assetto Corsa EVO required.
